CO2 Per kg of Polymer Manufactured

Sustainable materials are designed to minimize resource depletion, reduce waste generation, and prioritize the well-being of both present and future generations. With this in mind, it is important to understand & measure the CO2 of each polymer type.

Many factors come into play when looking at the associated CO2per kg with each chemistry. The data we are showing are industry averages but can vary based on the following:

  • Type of power supplying the polymer manufacturing facility
  • Renewable power, coal power….
  • How modern the manufacturing plant is and whether it’s using the latest technologies
  • Efficiencies of the manufacturing plant
  • Which LCA standard the CO2 is being measured to
  • Recycled content can vary (recycled grades) so CO2can be even better than our data here with higher percentage content

Where we see a fossil-based Polycarbonate is producing 7.8 kg of CO2 per kg (industry average), we may find that some manufacturers produce less CO2 based on the factors mentioned above. Please check with your own polymer provider for the actual CO2 per kg for the grade in use.
